Catherine Darden-Johnson was the second child of John Napoleon and Victoria Hargrave-Darden of Courtland, Virginia. She grew
up in the home built by her grandfather, Henry M. (Buck) Darden which is located on Bride Street in Courtland, Virginia.
In 1933, she married Johnnie Johnson and moved to Bedford-Stoyvesant, Brooklyn, New York and where she gave birth to her
first born, Winston Douglas Johnson. After given birth to three children, Magdelene Johnson, Cynthia Johnson and Elaine Johnson
the marriage ended and she returned to live in Virginia.

    Upon returning to Virginia, she lived first in Franklin and then moved back to her roots in Courtland, Virginia. She was well known for her cooking and gardening and made a living having Friday night Fish fries (at a time when blacks were limited in dining venues),sewing and baking, especially wedding cakes.

    In her later years, she lived periodically with her oldest daughter, Magdelene Johnson-Hamilton in Norfolk, Virginia until her death on May 7, 1979 at Depaul Hospital in Norfolk. She is interred in the Darden Family Plot at the Helping Hand Cemetery in Courtland, Virginia.
