Savannah Atlantic Darden is the sixth of eight children born to Henry M. and Marcella Whitehead Darden of Jerusalem/Courtland, Virginia. Savannah's life span 78 years from October 27, 1878 to July 4, 1956. She lived most of her adult life in a house built by her father which was located along Sedley Road at Bride Street in the town of Courtland.

Her life was a struggle and there was no ideal family life of a father, mother and children. There are no records to indicated that she was every married. There are stories the she lived and may have "Jumped The Broom" (a form of marriage) with one the Indians across the Nottaway River. There she gave birth to one of her childern, Littleton Windborn.

Savannah had a total of nine childern which stretched outward to a network of aunts, uncles and cousins. Under the most difficult circumstances, she managed to raise a strong and durable family. She earned a living by selling vegetables and fruits from her ample garden and fruit trees. She washed an and ironed white people cloths. She cooked and baked and sold many items. She sold hogs and chickens to the local market. Her childern, especially the girls worked in white people's homes and the boys work at the sawmill or as field hands.

She is buried in the Helping Hand Cemetery in Courtland, Virginia on land donated by her aunt, Sarah Darden Hardy and husband Booker Hardy.
